Gastroscopy
Gastroscopy is a diagnostic procedure used to examine a horse’s stomach for gastric ulcers, a common cause of discomfort and poor performance. A long, flexible endoscope is passed through the horse’s nose into the stomach to provide direct visualisation of the stomach lining.
At Artemis Equine Vets, we primarily perform gastroscopy at our clinic using purpose built stocks and offer regular clinic days, including overnight admission for horses requiring pre-procedure starvation (available at additional cost). For owners who prefer not to starve their horse at home, this service provides convenience and professional supervision. In certain cases, we also offer mobile gastroscopy services and can perform the procedure on site, depending on facilities and individual requirements.

Horses must fast for 16 hours prior to the procedure, with water withheld for 2-3 hours before gastroscopy. Bedding should be removed or a grazing muzzle used to prevent ingestion. Alternatively, horses can be admitted the evening before to ensure strict fasting under veterinary care.
The procedure typically takes 15-20 minutes and is performed under sedation to minimise stress. Afterwards, horses are monitored and usually ready to return home within 1 to 1.5 hours, once fully awake and rehydrated.
High quality images of the stomach lining are captured during the exam, shared with owners, and stored for future comparison. A detailed veterinary report outlining the presence, type, location, and severity of ulcers is provided, along with a personalised treatment and management plan.
Gastroscopy is essential for diagnosing and effectively managing gastric ulcers, helping to improve your horse’s health and performance. Please contact us to discuss the best options for your horse and arrange an appointment.
