Thermography
At Artemis Equine Vets, we are proud to collaborate with Equine Performance Thermography (EPT) to offer advanced thermographic assessments as part of our comprehensive equine diagnostic services. Horses can be evaluated independently through thermography or as an integral component of a broader lameness work-up or poor performance investigation.
EPT utilises a cutting edge thermal imaging technique known as 'core heat extraction' which detects and highlights variations in surface temperature at precise anatomical locations. These temperature differences can indicate underlying inflammation, injury, or other pathologies before clinical signs become apparent, providing valuable early insight into a horse’s condition.
EPT is the sole provider of this unique thermography method in

the UK. Unlike conventional thermography, this technology allows the thermal image (thermogram) to be accurately superimposed onto a digital photograph of the horse, pinpointing exact anatomical areas of concern with exceptional precision. This innovative approach enhances diagnostic accuracy and helps guide targeted treatment plans.
All scans are conducted by technician Sarah Holland-Villa, whose expertise ensures the highest quality imaging. Following the scan, the images and accompanying video assessments are reviewed by Kate Granshaw, an experienced equine veterinarian, who provides a detailed veterinary report interpreting the findings. When the thermography is performed independently, video footage of the horse’s movement is submitted alongside the images to support a thorough assessment.
The benefits of thermography are numerous: it is a completely non-invasive and radiation free procedure, making it safe and stress free for the horse. It is also a cost effective diagnostic tool that provides a functional evaluation of the horse’s musculoskeletal system.
Thermography can be used for early injury detection, ongoing monitoring of healing progress, or as a complementary technique within a broader clinical examination.A full body thermographic scan typically takes approximately 1½ hours and can be performed conveniently at the owner’s premises or during scheduled thermography clinics held at our veterinary facility.

If you are interested in incorporating thermography into your horse’s health management or would like to learn more about how it can support diagnosis and treatment, please contact us or EPT to arrange an appointment.
